EXPLANATION AND SUMMARY:
Attached is an application from Robert and Virginia Johnson to designate their home at 217 Walnut Lane, NW, as a Town of Vienna Historic Site. According to tax records, there was a building on the site from 1898. The first owner, who bought the land from Captain Harmon Salsbury and his wife Suzanna, was Thomas Robinson. The property is located in Lot One of the original Windover Heights plat from 1894.
Historic Vienna Inc. recommends that the location be approved for the Historic Register as a presumptive candidate under the register requirements: Section 25-8, a) Buildings and other structures erected at their present location that are at least 100 years old and which retain all or a substantial portion of their original dimension and appearance.
The application was reviewed and approved unanimously at the May 8, 2024, Historic Vienna, Inc. board meeting.
Departmental Recommendation: The Parks and Recreation Director recommends approving the addition of 217 Walnut Lane, NW, to the Vienna Historic Property Register, #32.

Town Attorney Recommendation: Pursuant to Town Code Section 25-5, “(t)he owner of any structure, site or place deemed by said owner to be of historic significance to the Town may apply for listing on the register…” Town Code Section 25-8, provides for presumptive qualifications for registration. The Town Council may approve, disapprove, or approve with conditions or qualifications in its discretion.
