EXPLANATION AND SUMMARY:
On September 11, 2023, the Town approved a substantial financial investment to enhance the planting design and supplement the vegetation in the 46 landscape planters along Church Street, between Mill Street NE and Lawyers Road NW, on both sides of the street. On October 23, 2023, the Town Council approved a capital improvement project to install an irrigation system in these planters to support the long-term health and sustainability of the plantings.
Town staff will collaborate with the Economic Development Department and the Vienna Business Association to ensure businesses are notified in advance of the scheduled work. The work will be concentrated on the planter areas along Church Street and will proceed in segments, with the contractor moving to the next section upon completion of each one. Sidewalks and parking lots will remain accessible throughout the duration of the project. Parallel parking spaces along the segments will be reserved for contractor parking The installation of the irrigation system is expected to take approximately two months. Prior to the start of this work, the Town will install five water meters along Church Street.
The Town has a contract (#23-30) with Hydro-Tech Irrigation Company. Hydro-Tech Irrigation will furnish all labor, equipment and materials to install automatic underground irrigation systems for the brick planters along both sides of Church St. from Lawyers Rd. to Mill St. This price includes all necessary cutting and patching of the brick driveways and sidewalks as necessary to install sleeves.
NEXT STEPS:
If Council approves the recommendation, Parks & Recreation will issue a purchase order to Hydro-Tech Irrigation Company to initiate the irrigation project on the Church Street planters.
ANTICIPATED COMPLETION TIMEFRAME:
The project is expected to start construction in June 2025 and be completed by August 2025.
