Title

Legislative Agenda 2027 Discussion of a proposed Virginia General Assembly legislative agenda

Body

BACKGROUND SUMMARY:

Each year the Town Council adopts a Legislative Agenda to submit to the Virginia General Assembly for consideration. This is the first meeting to provide the Town Council Members with the opportunity to review last year’s Town Legislative Agenda and to discuss among Town Council what it may want to include in the Town’s 2027 Legislative Agenda.

OVERVIEW:

The Town Attorney will coordinate with the Town Council and Department Directors to prepare a draft legislative agenda for a discussion with the Town’s Delegate and Senator.

SUMMARY/STAFF IMPRESSIONS:

The starting point for this year’s legislative agenda will be what was passed by Town Council for the 2026 Legislative Agenda with consideration giving to actions taken by the 2026 General Assembly as it impacted the Town’s Legislative Agenda. Additional suggested items for consideration may be submitted by Town Council Members, Staff, and where applicable, the Town Attorney.

RECOMMENDATION:

Recommended Action

Provide general direction for Town Attorney to facilitate drafting and ranking items for the 2027 Legislative Agenda.

This discussion should be a preview of the Conference Session that is planned for the  October 19th meeting with Senator Salim and Delegate Seibold, and a subsequent Public Hearing will be set for public input.  The pre-filing deadline for legislation is earlier this year and is now set for November 30, 2026.
