Title

10:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Discussion on deer management in the town

Body

BACKGROUND SUMMARY:  Several residents have approached council with concerns about the deer population in the Town.  These concerns focus mostly on the damage the animals are doing to plantings and landscaping.

OVERVIEW: The Town does not currently have a Deer Management Program, and the Town Code generally prohibits the discharge of guns or use of bows and arrows as well as hunting in the Town.  Fairfax County has had a Deer Management Program since 1998 and does actively hunt / manage deer in many county parks including some surrounding Vienna.  In FY 2024 this program harvested 773 deer throughout Fairfax County which includes 63 deer harvested in parks surrounding the Town.

SUMMARY/STAFF IMPRESSIONS: Although Town parks are limited in size, there are options available should the Town wish to implement deer management.

RECOMMENDATION: Recommend Council listen to the presentation and then provide direction on next steps.
