EXPLANATION AND SUMMARY:
Currently, Fairfax County radio traffic is routed through a 'Central Electronic Bank' (CEB's) of cards. Vienna's radio traffic travels from the CEB, through a phone line, and is then recorded on our recording equipment at the Vienna Police Department. In the near future, estimated at 1 to 1 1/2 years, Fairfax County will switch their radio console system including the console system used by the Vienna dispatchers. The new equipment will not have the CEB card bank; therefore, we will no longer be getting our radio feed through the phone lines.
In order to maintain the recording of our Vienna Police radio traffic, we will need to dedicate 3 mobile radio units (one for each channel). They will be mounted at the Police Station with a feed directly to our recording equipment. It is essential that the radios and necessary equipment be in place and operational well before Fairfax County's switch.
The Police Department had enough money in its budget to purchase two of the three mobile radios needed to complete this change. Although this one purchase was only $10,219.00, previous purchases of radios through Motorola Solutions, riding Stafford County contract #1024064 during FY2015 amounted to over $15,000.00 so this purchase required council approval. There was however no council meeting prior to the end of FY2015, so a waiver was authorized and this item is now coming in front of council for approval after the purchase.
