BACKGROUND SUMMARY:
Council will hold a work session to review the draft of the Comprehensive Plan update and options for handling traffic on Maple Avenue.
OVERVIEW:
The State of Virginia mandates that jurisdictions review their Comprehensive Plan every 5 years. To that end, staff has prepared the attached update of the draft Comprehensive Plan for Council review. The draft reflects the changes requested by the Planning Commission and some informal input from staff and Council members. We have amended the roundabout language in the Transportation Chapter to reference roundabouts as just one of several alternatives for dealing with traffic and place making. The final roundabout illustration will have a less detailed and more conceptual rendering by the time we meet for your work session. It will show a potential vision for a future Maple Avenue with a landscaped median and roundabouts. We can discuss other visionary Maple Avenue options presented at the work session which Town Council may want to include as well in the Comprehensive Plan draft update.

SUMMARY/STAFF IMPRESSIONS:
We have given special attention to the downtown area between Park and Lawyers which we are now referring to as the "Village Square." Some prefer calling it "Town Square." We can discuss what we want to call it but the intent is to develop a clear sense of place in the downtown area. This update also includes a much improved format that clearly states Goals, Objectives, Implementation Strategies and Success/ Failure Indicators.
We are truly grateful for the Planning Commission's work in reviewing the draft plan update. Your thoughtful input will help us make this an even better Plan.
