BACKGROUND SUMMARY:

The Mayor has expressed interest in having the Town develop performance measures and provide a transparency website/dashboard on which these measures can be viewed by the public.  Permitting access to performance measures and the tracking of performance measures helps citizens better understand how and how efficiently the Town is serving them; it also may improve how staff measures what we do for citizens. The Finance Department is taking the lead on this initiative since it largely relates to the budget.

 

OVERVIEW:

We have started researching performance measures and have determined that we need to spend time developing appropriate and meaningful measures that support the Town’s goals and objectives.  Our goal is to have measures available to vet internally by the winter of 2017 and to include recommendations for a performance measures/open government software system in our 2018-19 budget a year from now.  The ultimate goal is to implement an outward-facing dashboard by the summer of 2018.

 

Attached are a summary presentation and documents prepared by the City of San Francisco that offer a good summary of the objectives of a performance measurement system.  Also attached for your reference is the Town of Vienna’s current Key Performance Areas that ultimately would drive our performance measures.
