EXPLANATION AND SUMMARY:
The Town is considering purchasing for $4.6 million 43,000 square feet of floor area in a proposed Mill Street building as a capital asset to be used for public parking. The project is located near the center of the Town's pedestrian and commercial activity. This project could provide approximately 127 public parking spaces of which 63 spaces can be made available to Metro commuters, car-poolers, and/or cyclists. The Vienna/Oakton metro parking garages regularly fills to capacity, and the Tysons stations do not provide any public parking; this project supplies additional parking for users of the Metro system. Located close to Maple Ave and close to a Metrobus stop, this proposed garage provides connectivity to mass transit and alternative links to two nearby Metrorail stations (Vienna/Oakton Station and Greensboro Station) as well as easy access to the W&OD trail for bicycle commuters.
The NVTA application requests $2.3 million (half of the Town's total cost) in regional transportation dollars that are collected from a portion of Northern Virginia sales tax.
