Council articles in the Vienna Voice newsletter

BACKGROUND SUMMARY:
Traditionally, Councilmembers have taken turns writing an article on a rotating basis for one of the June-December issues of Vienna Voice, the Town’s monthly newsletter. The mayor writes the June article, and other months are assigned based on Council seniority - the longest-serving Councilmember writes the July article while the newest Councilmember writes the December one. (No Council article is published January-May to avoid “election season” and any appearance of politicizing the article.) The topic of the article has been left entirely to each Councilmember; the tradition has been that the article is non-political and informational. Councilmember Colbert has requested that Council discuss these articles and recent topic selections.
RECOMMENDATION:
Council may discuss Council articles in the Vienna Voice newsletter and determine to leave topic selection up to individual Councilmembers, without guidance, or Council may elect to create or have staff create guidelines that inform topic selection. Council also may consider other options, including the possibility of no longer publishing Council articles in the newsletter.
