EXPLANATION AND SUMMARY:

The Town's last significant zoning code changes occurred more than 50 years ago in 1969; a significant portion of the current code includes regulations that date back to the 1956 zoning ordinance. The July 6 Town Council meeting agenda includes consideration of a contract award to a land use planning consulting team to clarify, simplify, reorganize, and update the Town's subdivision and zoning ordinances, Chapters 17 and 18 of the Town Code. The update is necessary to ensure that the Town's zoning regulations are in compliance with state statutes and, more specifically, that temporary sign regulations are compliant with recent Supreme Court decisions. It is proposed that the temporary sign regulations in the Town's Code be updated immediately based on provisions from the model sign ordinance. The model sign ordinance also will be considered as part of the more comprehensive zoning update process.
